Mixed Media

Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting which translates to “burn in” from the ancient Greek, is a time honored painting medium that dates back to the 5th century BC.

This process involves the use of heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added.  This is then applied to multiple surfaces including prepared wood, fabric, plexiglas and high quality paper. Once applied to a surface, encaustic cools quickly. Other pigments may be applied, creating the depth, luminosity, and dimensionality typical of the medium.  The surface quality of encaustic paint can be left roughly textured or given a matte or glossy like finish.

As you can see from my work, I use fabric, metal, paper, flowers and other objects to add to the sense of luminosity and mystery common to encaustic.
